Many of the expectant and new parents I work with are starting to think seriously, often for the first time, about things like life insurance, educational saving plans, saving money etc. It can be hard to know where to begin and who to trust. Karen Di Venanzo is a Sunlife financial adviser who was recommended to me by one of my clients. Being a mother of a young child herself , she has a special interest in working with local families, without the pressure and manipulation often used.
After speaking with many families, Karen has found that there are common areas of interest. She is holding weekly chats for groups of approx 5 people, on Saving money, Health insurance options, life insurance, and Education savings. Babies and kids welcome. She is also in the process of finding an evening location for 6pm-7pm.

Over 100 hundred Vancouver moms, babies & dads came out for a nurse-in, to support Manuel Valle, who was asked not to breastfeed her two month old in a local H&M.
Breastfeeding in a public place is a protected right in B.C. Unfortunately, reading the comments on the on-line news articles it seems that many see it as the same thing as walking around naked, having sex, or having a bowel movement in public! Geesh! Read the rest of this entry »
Here is a lovely article from the Chicago Tribune about a father supporting breastfeeding. A lot of fathers may not realize how much easier their support can make it for mom to breastfeed – or even what they can to help.

This Chinese policewoman is breastfeeding EIGHT babies left without milk in the wake of the terrible earthquake.
The Mamma’s Milk website has lots of free sling patterns on it. Most of them are easy to make and cost a fraction of the store price.
A tube sling is a great tool for a new parent to have. They are easy to use, and cheap and simple to make. If possible, I recommend putting your baby in a sling on the day they are born. They usually love the womb like feeling, and fall fast asleep. You can start using a carrier at any point, but it may take a while for your baby to get use to it, if you start later.
With a sling you can carry your newborn with you and have your hands free. It allows for discreet breastfeeding, anytime, any place. And my personal favourite, a sling allows you to go the bathroom, when you have a baby who doesn’t want to be put down.
I used micro fleece for both the slings in the above pictures. Depending on the cost of fabric, you can make a tube sling for $0.50 – $2.00. The nice thing about micro fleece is that it won’t fray, so you don’t even need to hem the edge.
Jan Andrea’s tube sling pattern is one of my favourites. The red sling above is made following her pattern exactly. I prefer a deeper pouch, like the black tube sling above, so have made a few adjustments to the pattern.
